Every document below was issued by the manufacturer — a discontinuation notice, a do-not-mix instruction, a repair-method bulletin, or the original specification. Like kind and quality — not “matching”

Most homeowners arrive at this fight using the carrier’s vocabulary, and it costs them. Here is the distinction that decides these claims.

• Like kind and quality is the contractual duty. It is the language in your policy, and it is a replacement-cost and indemnity concept — what it takes to make the covered building whole. It is not an appearance theory.
• “Matching” is the carrier’s label. Reframing the dispute as being about how the roof looks moves the argument onto ground where a carrier can call you fussy. A discontinued or incompatible material may require broader replacement before aesthetics are ever reached, because the building cannot be restored with available materials of like kind and quality.
• Availability is not compatibility. A “closest available” letter establishes only that a distributor sells something. It does not establish that the something integrates with your assembly — and the manufacturers publish do-not-mix instructions proving it sometimes cannot.
• Identification is not integration. An ITEL report identifies the material. It does not certify that a substitute will work with what remains on the building.
• Repairability is an outcome, not a label. Calling a roof “repairable” is not proof. The actual sequence has to be performable — sealant separation, fastener extraction, handling aged material, compatible insertion, refastening, flashing and ridge integration — without causing collateral damage.

Where a carrier asserts a repair or a substitute, the honest demand is specific: name the exact replacement product — manufacturer, line, colour, dimensions, exposure, nail zone, sealant design, profile, supplier, quantity available locally and lead time — and identify who will perform the method and answer for it if it fails.

One caution, stated plainly: nobody can promise you a full replacement. These claims are settled every day and denied every day, and the difference is almost always the quality of the documentation rather than the force of anyone’s opinion. That is what this library is for.

Tennessee goes further than the policy language and regulates appearance directly — TDCI Rule 0780-01-05-.10 requires replaced items that do not match in quality, colour or size to be brought to a “reasonably uniform appearance,” according to the applicable policy provisions, at no cost beyond betterment and the deductible. Georgia and South Carolina have no equivalent regulation; there the argument runs on the policy language, the unfair claims practices statute, and the claim-handling deadlines.

What the original product actually was.

The last two categories are the ones carriers rarely anticipate. A system requirement document does not argue about your shingle at all — it establishes that the underlayment has to lap over the ridge onto the next slope, or that the water-resistive barrier behind your siding is a continuous taped assembly. Either way the repair cannot be confined to the damaged area, and the estimate that says otherwise is describing something that cannot be built.

How you actually prove it

1. Identify the material in writing. “I think it’s Chalet” is not evidence. Get the manufacturer and product line identified by someone qualified, in a dated document.
2. Find the manufacturer’s own statement. That is what this library is. A discontinuation notice or do-not-mix instruction turns your position from an opinion into a documented fact — and it is the manufacturer’s fact, not yours.
3. Photograph what stays, not just what broke. The dispute is decided on how a repair sits against the undamaged remainder.
4. Find the leftovers. The bundle in the garage, the wrapper in the attic, the builder’s spec sheet. People throw these away and then need them.
5. Do not let a patch happen first. Once a mismatched or incompatible repair is installed, you are arguing about something already done.
